🇬🇧 Seven Cities in the Running to Host Eurovision 2023

Seven cities are still in the running to host Eurovision 2023. Due to the circumstances in Ukraine, the United Kingdom will host the contest.

A total of 20 cities expressed interest in hosting, with the BBC reducing that number to seven. The second round of the bidding process will now go forward with the following cities:

  • Birmingham
  • Glasgow
  • Leeds
  • Liverpool
  • Manchester
  • Newcastle
  • Sheffield

The cities shortlisted must meet a set of criteria outlined by the European Broadcasting Union. This includes the following:

  • Having a suitable venue and sufficient space to deliver the requirements of the Eurovision Song Contest
  • The commitment that can be made by a city or region to hosting the event, including the financial contribution
  • The strength of the cultural offer which includes off screen local and regional activity as well as showcasing Ukrainian culture and music
  • Alignment with the BBC’s strategic priorities as a public service broadcaster, such as providing value to all audiences and supporting the creative economy in the UK

A decision is expected within the next few months when the bidding process is complete. According to the BBC, the UK government may be consulted, however ultimately the decision is made by the EBU and BBC.
